But anyone over 13 who's willing to think as well as be entertained when watching a Disney movie would probably love Hunchback. One plot element not in the novel is borrowed from the : not only does Esmeralda survive at the end, but she eventually comes to love Gringoire and again as in that film, it is strongly implied that they stay together after he rescues her. Quasimodo is supposed to generate feelings of pathos; that does not happen in this movie. Although Esmeralda does not love him, and in fact believes him to be a coward rather than a true man, she takes pity on his plight and marries him. The scene with 'Hellfire' is truly chilling. Unable to fight him off, Esmeralda grabs the whistle and frantically blows it.
The movie suffered a little bit from what I found at times to be a less than appropriate musical score, and the quality of the film is not especially good at least when I saw it but that is hardly surprising given its age. The moment I saw him pick his up, I bawled like a kid. While deserved praise goes to the animators and crew, the voice talent here is, in my opinion, Disney's very best. He orders Quasimodo to kidnap her, but Quasimodo is captured by Phoebus and his guards, who save Esmeralda. He rarely ventures outside the Cathedral because the citizens of Paris despise and shun him for his appearance. Actually, having the Disney label on it makes people upset when they see it because they expect a Disney plot. Robert Powell, w Sumptuous fourteenth film version of the Victor Hugo classic with Anthony Hopkins' Quasimodo earning him an Emmy Award nomination as Outstanding Actor. Every song except one, which I'll get to later is amazing. This is the Disney movie that deserved an Oscar nomination more than any other, and it is a shame that it has been so underplayed and all but disowned by Disney since its release. Quasimodo also kills in self-defence by impaling him on a hook in the wall rather than throwing him off of the tower. He is also deaf, which makes it more difficult because when he asks Quasimodo for his name, age and profession, Quasimodo does not respond. He goes into a panic when she is nowhere to be found.
How anybody can deny that this is a fantastic film is beyond me. Great fun in voices from Thomas Hulce, Demi Moore, kevin Kline, Tonyt Jay and Jason Alexander as a gargoyle. Demi Moore, Kevin Kline, Tony Jay, Paul Kandel and the rest of the cast all sound at the top of their game creating wonderful and vivid characters. I vaguely recalled scenes I had seen when I saw it at the theater I was 5 or 6 then , so I wanted to remember what exactly happened in it.
